Most people don’t want truth.
They want emotional relief.

Truth asks something from you.
It creates friction.
It makes you sit with uncertainty, contradiction, effort.
Relief does the opposite.
It dissolves tension.
It says, “You’re fine. It’s not your fault. Here’s the frame that lets you breathe again.”
That’s why hot takes spread faster than insight.
A hot take resolves discomfort in a sentence.
Insight usually creates more of it.
Scroll through your feed and notice the pattern.
Stoicism becomes:
“Detach from everything and you’ll never suffer.”
Productivity becomes:
“Wake up at 5am and your life will work.”
Mental health becomes:
“Protect your peace. Cut off anything that feels hard.”
Each of these began as a real, complex attempt to understand human limits.
Each gets flattened into a slogan that removes tension instead of teaching you how to carry it.
A few weeks ago, I caught myself doing this in real time.
I had written a paragraph that felt honest but messy. It didn’t resolve anything. It asked a question I didn’t know how to answer yet.
Then I rewrote it into something cleaner. Kinder. Sharper.
It felt better.
It also felt false.
I could almost see the engagement it would get. I could also feel the thought I had just amputated.

Real stoicism isn’t comfort.
It’s training to face pain without lying to yourself.
Real productivity isn’t aesthetic routines.
It’s choosing what matters and accepting what must be sacrificed.
Real mental health isn’t constant soothing.
It’s learning to stay present with difficult internal states without immediately anesthetizing them.
But that work is slow.
It doesn’t fit in a square image.
It doesn’t make you feel better now.
So it loses to the post that says:
“You’re perfect as you are.”
“You don’t need to change.”
“Just let go.”
Those lines aren’t wrong.
They’re incomplete.
They offer relief without capacity.
Comfort without structure.
Permission without orientation.
People don’t share what deepens them.
They share what resolves the ache of the moment.
Not because they’re shallow.
Because friction is tiring.
Every time I choose the clean sentence over the honest one, I feel the same small relief.
And the same small loss.
The quiet tragedy is that a culture trained to avoid inner tension slowly forgets how to think.
Not because it lacks intelligence.
Because thinking itself begins to feel unsafe.
Truth rarely feels like relief.
It feels like weight.
And weight is something you have to learn how to hold.
